5 Easy Kitchen Swaps to Cut Single-Use Waste

The kitchen is where a lot of everyday waste starts: cling wrap, paper towel, sponges and bin liners get used once and thrown away. You don't need to change everything at once. Start with one swap, get used to it, then try the next.

1. Swap cling wrap for beeswax wraps

Beeswax wraps mould around bowls, half-cut fruit and sandwiches using the warmth of your hands. Rinse them in cool, soapy water and they can be reused again and again. Our cut-to-size roll lets you make exactly the sizes you need.

Tip: keep them away from hot water and raw meat.

2. Swap paper towel for washable cloths

A stack of reusable cloths handles most spills and wipe-downs that paper towel would. Keep a small basket of clean ones by the sink and a bag for used ones next to the washing machine.

3. Swap plastic utensils for wood and bamboo

Wooden and bamboo spatulas and spoons are gentle on cookware and, with a little care (hand wash, dry promptly, oil occasionally), last for years.

4. Swap disposable containers for long-lasting ones

Glass and stainless steel containers can go from fridge to lunchbox for years, replacing takeaway tubs and zip-lock bags.

5. Rethink your bin liners

Plant-based bin liners use less conventional plastic. Just check with your local council — compostable liners generally break down in commercial composting facilities, not in landfill.
